Responses of the Extraocular Oblique and Splenius Capitis Muscles to Excitation of Semicircular Canal Nerve in Rabbits

Abstract
In urethanized rabbits, the electromyographic activities of extraocular oblique muscles and splenius capitis muscles following selective electrical stimulation of each semicircular canal nerve were studied.
Stimulation of individual semicircular canal nerves of one side caused relaxation of the ipsilateral inferior oblique muscle while contralateral canal nerve stimulation caused the opposite effect. During each of above stimulation, the superior oblique muscle always showed the opposite response to the inferior oblique muscle, i.e. they showed antagonistic effects. The splenius capitis muscle was relaxed by the ipsilateral semicircular canal nerve stimulation and contracted by the contralateral semicircular canal nerve stimulation. When the semicircular canal nerve was stimulated, the splenius capitis muscle and the inferior oblique muscle of the one side always behaved likewise while the inferior oblique muscle of the contralateral side showed the opposite response.
From the above experimental results, it was concluded that, when the semicircular canal nerves were stimulated, both the splenius capitis muscle and the inferior oblique muscle in the same side responded in the same way while the superior obique muscle responded in the opposite fashion.
